Breast enlargement herb safe for humans: Thai ministry

BANGKOK, Aug. 25 (Kyodo) -- A Thai herbal medicine that can enlarge women's breasts does not cause cancer and is safe for human consumption, the Public Health Ministry said Wednesday.

Health Minister Korn Dabbaransi said toxicity studies by the ministry's Medical Sciences Department showed no adverse effects on rats given low doses of 10 milligrams of the herb per kilogram of body weight every day for three months.

The drug, made from the indigenous plant Pueraria mirifica and known locally as white kwao keur, became an instant success after a Thai biologist found it could increase a woman's breast size by up to 2.5 centimeters in five days.

White kwao keur contains miroestrol, a chemical substance similar to estrogen, which can enlarge breasts and hips, improve hair quality and complexion, and reduce menopausal symptoms, according to Wichai Cherdshewasart, the biologist at Chulalongkorn University.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently warned that frequent consumption of the substance could cause cancer and launched a series of raids on drug stores to seize medicine made from the herb.

But the health ministry's study showed no link between cancer and the herb when taken in low doses over a short term, Pranee Chavalitdhamrong, one of the researchers, told Kyodo News.

''Those whose body weight averages 50 kilograms are recommended not to take more than 100 milligrams of white kwao keur per day,'' she said.

Wichai said the result of the study confirms his earlier claim that the herb is not toxic, adding that human beings could take up to 200 milligrams daily without any side-effects.

''The herb may even reduce the risk of breast cancer in women since it could kill cancer cells in the formative stages,'' he said.

Korn said the health ministry will support further research on long-term consumption of the herb and promote production of the medicine for export if studies confirm its complete safety.
